Words from a Mechanic
Welcome to a world maybe never seen before, a world where you may have bad experiences and maybe not. It's a world that every single person has had a experience(being positive or not), it's a world that at least once every 3 months you go to if you have a car. Did you guess? YES an auto dealership or a auto repair shop. One place you can't live without IF you have a car, unless you are one of those who fix-it-yourself. And who is the guy that your life depends on? Yes the MECHANIC, he's more important than a lawyer, a doctor, your boss at work, more important than any professional in any field. Bottom line: Your life is in his hands. Don't take me wrong, if there is something wrong with your car, he has an obligation to tell you a lot if "WHAT'S".
- What is wrong with your car...
- What will it take to fix it...
- What it will cost...
- What happens if you don't take care of it...
- What happened to the customer that didn't take care of his car and how he had blown his engine for not taking care of it.
I can keep on going on about all the do's and don't of both sides(the customer side and the mechanic's side), I'm not here to throw stones at anyone, I opened this space to EDUCATE both you the CUSTOMER and US the MECHANICS. I won't tell you for what dealership I work for, but it's an all-american one. Dam proud to be an american, maybe I can't write like the guy from Harvard, but I bet you my thought process is better and faster, LOL.
Ok now, I'm in the process of setting up this Blog, confess I'm nervous about it, because I know we're going to see some hot heads express their thought and experiences. Fell free. Speak your mind.
Let's begin. Let's see what Wikipedia says about mechanics:
in automobile maintenance, repair, and sometimes modification. A mechanic may be knowledgeable in working on all parts of a variety of car makes or may specialize either in a specific area or in a specific type of car. In repairing cars, their main role is to diagnose the problem accurately and quickly. They often have to quote prices for their customers before commencing work or after partial disassembly for inspection. The mechanic uses both electronic means of gathering data as well as their hands, ears, eyes and nose. Their job may involve the repair of a specific part or the replacement of one or more parts as assemblies.
Basic vehicle maintenance is a fundamental part of a mechanic's work in some countries, while in others they are only consulted when a vehicle is already showing signs of malfunction. Preventative maintenance is also a fundamental part of a mechanic's job, but this is not possible in the case of vehicles that are not regularly maintained by a mechanic. One misunderstood aspect of preventative maintenance is scheduled replacement of various parts, which occurs before failure to avoid far more expensive damage. Because this means that parts are replaced before any problem is observed, many vehicle owners will not understand why the expense is necessary.
With the rapid advancement in technology, the mechanic’s job has evolved from mechanical to electronic technology. Because vehicles today posses complex computer and electronic systems, mechanics need to have a broader base of knowledge than in the past. Lately, the term “auto mechanic” is being used less and less frequently and is being replaced by the euphamistic title “automotive service technician”. Fading quickly is the day of the 'shade tree mechanic', who needed little knowledge of today's computerized systems.
Due to the increasingly labyrinthine nature of the technology that is now incorporated into automobiles, most automobile dealerships now provide sophisticated diagnostic computers to each technician, without which they would be unable to diagnose or repair a multitude of common failures.
